Project Title: Acoustic Management Panels
Project Summary: Using DuPont’s signature product, Corian® Solid Surface, this project focuses on designing and developing acoustic management panels that can dampen, diffuse, and focus sound waves. Since Corian® Solid Surface primarily reflects sound, the development of effective diffusing panels is a key challenge and this project’s primary focus. The team explored three innovative design
concepts: the Quadratic Diffuser Panel, which evenly redistributes sound energy using Schroeder Diffusion principles; the Focusing Panel, which channels sound waves toward a designated focal
point via wavefront convergence; and the Crosshatch Diffuser, which employs Helmholtz resonance for targeted absorption and scattering. Each concept was developed using CAD modeling and CNC machining, with the diffusing panel undergoing additional k-Wave simulations in MATLAB and physical testing in an anechoic chamber. With the sound manipulation market being highly competitive and largely reliant on porous materials, developing acoustic panels from Corian® Solid Surface addresses a significant gap in the market.
