Project Summary: Introducing Swift Straps: an alternative quick strap system that will not tangle, dangle, or get caught on wheels. The straps will be retractable on one side allowing the EMT to pull on the strap, extend it over the patient and click it into the corresponding buckle. The purpose of the straps is to make the transfer process much more efficient for EMTs while keeping the safety and comfort of the patient in mind.
Journey: After coming up with the idea for a spinal back strap, the team interviewed EMTs at Syracuse University Ambulance (SUA) to get feedback on their idea that they incorporated into their design. The team then created multiple prototypes using the SU Maker Space and machine shop to improve their design. Once they had a viable prototype, they bought a mannequin and ran trials to compare movement using polypropylene straps versus swift straps.
