Motivation: Golf is a mentally and technically challenging sport. It requires the player’s attention to every detail, specifically demanding precision when it comes to grip position and the pressure applied onto the golf club. Beginner golfers often struggle when developing their grip, and without learning proper grip technique, the user can lose control of the club, resulting in a non-ideal golf shot. Though standard golf grips have textures and patterns to assist players, issues with building the correct muscle memory and learning to analyze and refine one’s swing and grip prevail in the early stages of golf swing development.
Project Summary: GripSync is an attachable grip trainer that uses pressure sensor technology to provide real-time feedback on the user’s grip pressure and swing tempo. The device sends feedback to an iOS app where users can compare their pressure readings against a pro golfer’s ideal swing pressure during different parts of their swing path. This will provide golfers and coaches with a visual that shows where the user lost grip control, which part of the swing needs improvement, and what they could do differently to improve. After helping the user build a strong grip foundation and muscle memory, GripSync expands on those fundamentals through provided analytical data on the user’s technique, giving golfers an entry-level way to become methodical in their technique.
